Why this site (PNCs):
(page updated: Jul 20/04)

My first stamp collection some 35 years ago was the United States, although I live in Canada. As the years have gone by I have collected other countries (primarily Canada and the Great Britain Machins).

The advent of plate numbers on coil stamps by the US in April 1981 started me on the hunt for these different stamps. On some stamp issues many dozens of different plate numbers can be found. This site lists over 932 different plate numbers! The challenge to find as many as possible and fill in the empty spaces in my home-made album pages is very rewarding.

Varieties that are included:
  • phosphor types
  • peaks and valleys
  • perf transitions (square vs. round)
  • square and rounded corners
  • precancels
  • booklet singles with the plate number on the stamp

Varieties not included:

  • gum types
This site organizes all of the known US stamps that have plate numbers into simplified, yet detailed, checklists. Numerous e-mails have been received from novice PNC collectors - all giving thanks for providing this information via the web. Encouraging others and promoting the field of US PNCs is one of the primary reasons for this site. Check out the links page for other great PNC websites.

I hope you enjoy this site. Happy hunting! Top
